Where Could My Career Take Me?

Mike Still

Managing Director, Client Service, UK & Ireland, Corporate

I fell into insurance after I left school and studied mechanical engineering for a year before I realised it wasn’t for me. Someone I knew suggested insurance broking so I went and had a look. I liked the idea of helping people to do business and protect them. I joined as the office junior and I’ve never looked back.

The great thing about my job is that no day is typical as all my clients are very different and diverse in their views, businesses, and geographies. I spend about half my day with clients and future clients, then a quarter listening to and speaking with colleagues, and a quarter reviewing performance, learning, and positioning to help others learn.

What I love about Marsh is the people. You get to meet so many great people in all walks of life and it gives you a real grounding on what matters and how to engage hearts and minds in the business to help others achieve their potential. Marsh is able to help clients in so many ways and I love helping so it’s a great match.

Lifelong learning is core to high performing people and the Marsh Graduate Development Programme focuses many sorts of learning in a way that gives great people the opportunity to grow and reach their potential. A huge part of learning is experiential on the job and this gives real life learning that is often hard to really understand without actually living in the job and all the pressures it brings as the insurance, economic, and political market moves fast. It is hard to get all of this from a classroom. The online support and opportunity to network with experts in Marsh, the insurers, and our clients gives anyone with the hunger the best opportunity in the risk and insurance world.

The advice I’d give to graduates joining Marsh is to build a strong network of great connections in Marsh, Mercer, Marsh & McLennan Companies, insurers, clients, and advisers. No one is expected to know it all but if you know someone who can help, you are valued by the results. Throughout life, if you help others and show you care the good people help you back in the future. Remember though, networking is helping others not selling, so always put them first. If allowed a second, work hard, play hard, and always put something back.
