Where Could My Career Take Me?

Steve Dando

Senior Vice President, Head of Specialty Placement Plus

My path into insurance was slightly unusual. Upon returning from Afghanistan, I was unsure of what I wanted to do after leaving the Army. I reached out and organised a coffee and a tour of Lloyd’s with a former Army Officer I had served with. Ultimately, after the coffee and tour, I somewhat fortuitously found myself with an invitation to interview for a role at a Lloyd’s broker. The very next day I was offered the job.

I think the way I ended up working in insurance is somewhat indicative of some of the values you need to succeed ― being personable and able to develop and maintain relationships is an excellent foundation for working as a broker.

I lead the Placement Plus team for Marsh’s Specialty Practice, so we partner with colleagues in Aviation, Marine, Bowring Marsh, and FINPRO (financial and professional risks practice), therefore there really is no such thing as a typical day. At any one moment we could be running a tender for a new or existing facility, or we could be creating data reports for insurers, or equally as likely, brainstorming how we can create a new facility that drives innovation and delivers more client value.

I like the diversity that the role offers, and the ability and empowerment I feel we have at Marsh to push the boundaries and innovate, for the good of our clients. I also particularly enjoy when we land one of the new deals. We don’t have a particularly cyclical renewal season like most parts of insurance, so when we create a new deal, in all likelihood, we may well have created something for Marsh clients that has never been done before in the insurance market.

The greatest asset Marsh has is our people and our talent. The future leaders of Marsh should come from within – while outside experience can be very beneficial, when a company is built on strong cultural values such as loyalty and trust, these are best achieved through earning them within.

The benefit for you when you join Marsh is that you'll get an insight into how one of the global leaders in insurance broking and risk management operates. You are also given the opportunity to grow within the company, gain relevant insurance qualifications, and develop one of the best foundations you possibly can for your career in the world of insurance.

The advice I'd give to anyone joining is to develop an understanding of where your team and department fit within the broader Marsh organisation; that way you'll be able to capitalise on your own success.  I was also told when I joined not to underestimate the benefits of regular and open communication with your manager and your network ― this tip has come in handy constantly.
